About the design

"STOP WHALING (JPN)"

Only three countries continue commercial whaling today: Japan, Norway, and Iceland.
My design, stating „クジラを救え“ („Save the Whales“ in Japanese), addresses political decisions by the Japanese government that sustain an outdated and unnecessary industry.
After leaving the International Whaling Commission in 2019, Japan resumed and expanded commercial whaling, now including endangered fin whales. This happens despite a collapse in demand: consumption has dropped by over 99% since the 1960s. Most whale meat remains unsold, and the industry depends heavily on government subsidies.
This raises the question: why expand whaling when consumer demand is steadily declining?
Claims that whales reduce fish stocks have been scientifically disproven. Conversely, whales provide vital ecosystem services. They play an important role in nutrient cycling and support marine biodiversity and carbon sequestration. Essential for healthy ocean environments.

Wearing this shirt draws attention to these outdated political and economic motivations behind commercial whaling in Japan, especially the hunting of endangered species despite clear ecological, scientific, and market-based reasons to stop.

“Save the Whales” is a call to recognize whales as part of us, and to act with greater care and respect for these vital beings that connect us to the ocean and life itself.

With this T-Shirt we support Sea Shepherd fighting shark finning and illegal fishing in the ocean.
